What do I need to bring to my tax appointment?

Great question! For our first-time clients, we ask that you bring a copy of your previous year's tax return, if at all possible.  There is usually carry-over data year-over-year, and it's much easier to glean this information from the return itself.  If you don't have it, don't worry!  You will also need to bring all your current tax forms (W2's, 1099's, K1's, etc.).

I have itemized expenses, charitable donations and other receipts. Do I need to bring those to my appointment?

We get this question A LOT.  We have many clients who itemize for various reasons and we would ask that you bring a spreadsheet (or other like document) that outlines and totals your total medical expenses, mileage, total donations, un-reimbursed business expenses, etc.  We don't need to see the actual receipts, however, YOU need to keep those as a part of your tax file.

How much do you charge a new client for tax preparation?

At Unified Tax Services, we subscribe to a flat-rate for your tax preparation, currently $250.  This includes the preparation for your federal and state/s return/s, as well as e-filing where available. We don't believe in "nickel and diming" our clients for various forms and schedules required to prepare the return.  One price, easy for you, easy for us.

What is the process of having my return prepared and filed?

We thought you'd never ask!  For our first-time clients, we generally like to either meet you (in-person or via video conference) to go through your tax situation. Once we have all your documents, we prepare the return and file it electronically (where available).  Once we receive confirmation from the IRS and the state/s that your information has been accepted, your return will be ready for collating and completion. We offer a secure, encrypted electronic delivery of your tax return. Or, if you prefer old-school paper, we can provide that as well.  From our first appointment to final delivery, is approximately 2 weeks, barring no issues with missing documents, acceptance from tax agencies, etc.

How do I know when I will get my refund?

This is the favorite question of the tax season. For a refund from the IRS, simply visit irs.gov and click "refunds", then "where's my refund". For the state/s, you can Google "check my refund in (state abbreviation)" and follow the links.  Please note that UTS has no control as to how quickly you will receive your refund. We recommend direct deposit for the quickest refund, based on our clients' experience.

Anything else I need for a smooth tax appointment?

Thank you for asking this question!  A super easy way to ensure an efficient tax appointment is to fill out as many of our forms in advance of your appointment.  All of our new client families will need to fill our Client Intake Form {add link}. And all of our families, new and returning, will need to fill out and sign the Annual Engagement Letter (which includes our Terms of Agreement) {add link} and our Go Green! Initiative {add link}.
